CAVA CULTURAL AWARENESS THROUGH VISUAL ART YOUTHSOUND Reality Talk+Art=A Connection It is no mystery that today's youth are eons more advanced than those before it. It is also true that today's youth face obstacles that previously did not exist in past times. We live in an age of visual overloads and contradictions. On one hand, we want our youth to follow traditional values and teachings handed down generation to generation. But by the same token, we bombard our young people with images that go against the expectations we have for them. The end result is a confused, overexposed teen who has seen more than he or she should, but unable to process the information. There comes a point where a young person reaches an age where they no longer want to be told what life is about. Although the need for independent thought is extremely prominent when an individual reaches his or her late teens, there is still a need for sage guidance. The vessel of that guidance is usually what dictates the youth's response to it. If they are told what to do, many times at crucial moments the need to rebel rears its head and they make contradictory choices. The learning at this late stage of their young lives must come from a source that is more subversive and less dictation. It is my belief that the youth are more receptive to information when it is given to them from a source that seems somehow familiar.
